Arrested and condemned as a political enemy, he spends 17 years shuttled through detention centers, labor farms, and remote villages, subjected to campaigns that wrench both body and mind.Through Dan’s journey, the book traces everyday life from the 1950s to the end of the Cultural Revolution: frantic mass rallies in Tiananmen Square, the harsh routines and dark humor of prison work teams, the rigid class labels that pit villagers against one another, and the brutal absurdities of “Mountain Clearing” squads hunting down unauthorized frontier settlers. We meet peasants, petty officials, zealots and quiet resisters, opportunists and loyal friends, all trying to survive shifting political winds.Exiled to China’s frozen northeast, Dan joins “blind migrants” carving new settlements out of the forest, negotiating ethnic tensions, local corruption, and constantly changing rules. When Deng Xiaoping’s reforms finally bring his exoneration, he returns to engineering with undiminished energy, determined to build a decent life after losing nearly two decades to ideology.Based on extensive conversations, documents, and Dan’s own notes, this is a vivid, unsentimental account of how grand revolutionary dreams played out in the lives of ordinary people.
